Went to see a couple bands (Weedeater, Today is the Day, and Author and Punisher) at this tiny little hole-in-the-wall in downtown Indy and it. was. awesome. I was no more than five feet from the stage for the whole six hours and while my ears are still ringing (Weedeater’s guitarist and bassist were both using full stacks and I was within arm’s reach of the 6ft-tall left-side PA speaker) I’ll be going back this weekend for another gig . Seriously the most fun I’ve had so far this summer.
On a car-related note city driving just straight up sucks. I had to get to the gig during rush hour and even heading into the city it was bumper-to-bumper traffic, like full-stop-and-go on some parts of the interstate. Don’t even get me started on navigating side streets, I’ve delivered pizzas for four years and have a great sense of direction but guessing my way through the maze of one-ways and dead ends without GPS made me want to drive into oncoming traffic. I’ll stay up here in the suburbs with their clearly-marked and maintained roads, thank you very much.

This is true. Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen or played were at little local dives.

Way back in the 80s when I was in high school some friends of mine asked me to go with them to a little local club to see this awesome new hair band. I had my fill of hair bands already so I passed. I still remember the name of the band - Guns and Roses. While I’m not a huge fan, I do regret taking a pass on the offer to go see them in that kind of setting before they were big.

Must be crazy for the dudes who actually did go to the gig, especially with how huge Guns n Roses got in such a short amount of time. Kinda makes you wonder what tiny little bands touring the local circuit might make it tomorrow.
On a related story, I saw another band (who are legends of a very niche scene) at different dive here in town with no more than 60 people in the crowd, then saw them at a festival in France where there had to have been at least 3000 people watching.
That
was a weird experience too.

It is very cool to be able to see a band in a small, personal setting. Even if they are “nobody” you get a much better appreciation for the musical abilities when you are up close.
I looked up the GNR tours and see that the concert my friends went to was part of the “Appetite for Destruction” tour in Oshkosh Wisconsin in April 1988. It was at, more-or-less, a hotel ballroom. That album was released the previous summer, but didn’t make it to the top of the charts and radio play until the summer of 1988.
